CHICAGO -- Travis Wood got into trouble in the first inning when he walked the bases loaded before retiring Khris Davis on a grounder that kept the game scoreless. After a simple tweak, Wood cruised the rest of the way. The left-hander retired 19 of his final 21 batters and pitched two-hit ball for seven innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Sunday. "It was a struggle there in the first," Wood said. "We werent missing bad, but we were missing, so (there was) kind of a minor adjustment I had to make. I was kind of flying open a little bit there in the first after the first or second hitter, so we made it and were able to roll after that." Welington Castillo and Mike Olt homered for the Cubs, who took two of three from the NL Central leaders to win a series for the second time this season. Wood (4-4) allowed two runs and struck out seven. All three of his walks came in the first inning. "When he locates down into the corners, hes really, really effective," Chicago manager Rick Renteria said. The Cubs won their first series since taking two of three against the St. Louis Cardinals from May 2-4. "We had some timely hitting. Our pitching has been really good, and weve been able to close out the ballgames we lead," Renteria said. Hector Rondon earned his fifth save in five chances after allowing a leadoff double to Ryan Braun in the ninth for Milwaukees third hit. The Brewers, who began the day with the NLs best record, have scored 11 runs in five games. "He keeps the fastball away well. He throws the cutter inside to right-handers well and mixes in a curveball," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said about Wood. "He commanded the ball well, and were a little bit off offensively. Three hits, just not many guys on base to do things with." Marco Estrada (3-2) gave up four runs and seven hits -- five doubles and two homers -- in five innings. In nine games this season, Estrada has served up 12 home runs, second-most in the majors. "I was terrible, plain and simple. Terrible," Estrada said. "Ive got to figure things out. My off-speed pitches havent been there and thats whats letting me down, that and elevating the fastball when Im not trying to." Castillos two-run shot gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the second. Luis Valbuena scored on Castillos fifth homer after drawing a walk. The Cubs extended their lead to 3-0 in the third after Starlin Castro and Valbuena hit back-to-back doubles with two outs. Olt hit his team-leading ninth homer in the fourth to make it 4-0. He leads NL rookies in home runs. "Ive just gotten some good pitches to hit," Olt said. "As long as Im doing that, then Im happy. The home runs, I guess, have come in bunches. Hopefully I can keep it going." The Brewers got their first hit on Logan Schafers one-out double against Wood in the fifth. Two batters later, Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 4-2. The Brewers had been scoreless for 20 straight innings, since the second inning on Friday. "The first inning or two, when you have a pitcher in trouble, you need to get to them early," Roenicke said. After holding the Nets to 31.8 percent shooting in the third quarter to take a 77-68 lead into the fourth, Chicagos defense yielded a mere 12 points in the final period to send Brooklyn to a third straight lopsided defeat. The Nets, who lost soundly at home to both Atlanta and Cleveland over the past week, were a dreadful 4-of-20 from the field in the fourth quarter. Taj Gibson led the Bulls stout defensive effort with six blocks in addition to recording 11 points and 10 rebounds. Pau Gasol swatted away four shots to go along with 16 points and 16 boards, with Jimmy Butler chipping in 18 points in the win. Taj was very active, obviously, and so was Pau. And I thought we were better with our ball pressure, too, Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said. You never get there (defensively), you have to constantly work at it. But I liked the way we practiced this week. Deron Williams paced the Nets, who shot just 33 percent overall, with 17 points. The Bulls trailed by one early in the third quarter before turning the momentum with a 14-1 run that began with five straight points from Mike Dunleavy. Rose buried a key triple later in the pivotal surge, which ended on Gasols second-chance layup that gave Chicago a 68-56 lead. They gave me a lot of open shots tonight, but being in the condition to take those shots -- thats a huge key to the way that Im playing, said Rose. I think Im finally getting in great condition. Brooklyn then went completely cold over the final seven minutes as the Bulls turrned the game into a rout.dddddddddddd The Nets went four minutes without a field goal until Cory Jeffersons basket with 3:02 left. In between, Chicago ripped off 15 straight points -- seven coming from Rose -- to open up a 101-73 advantage. They turned up their defense and they put on a block party, said Nets head coach Lionel Hollins. We couldnt finish around the basket. Im proud of our guys and how we played -- we competed and we fought and we were short-handed. Everybody played as well as they could do. Chicago had its own offensive problems early on, going 0-for-4 with two turnovers as Brooklyn raced out to a quick 10-1 lead that became a 12-point differential shortly afterward, when an Alan Anderson 3-pointer had the Nets up 20-8 just past the midway stage of the first quarter. The Bulls were able to close the gap early in the second, with back-to-back treys by Dunleavy highlighting an 8-0 spurt that trimmed the margin to 32-30. Chicago owned a 49-43 edge late in the first half, but Brooklyn closed out the period on an 8-2 flurry to knot the score at 51-51 at the break. Game Notes Gibson started in place of regular center Joakim Noah, who sprained his ankle in Saturdays loss to Golden State ... Center Brook Lopez (back), guard Joe Johnson (illness) and forward Mirza Teletovic (hip) all sat out for Brooklyn ...
